For a bug to be fixable, three details are enough: your system (Mac, Windows, Linux, iPad, Android tablet), your version of Mnemesia, and what you were doing when the problem occurred. A screenshot is often worth all the rest.

In a Mnemesia folder, on your device. Mnemesia keeps a review database and your documents there, and keeps nothing anywhere else. On the App Store versions for Mac and iPad, you can choose to store it in your own iCloud (Settings > iCloud): your courses then move from one device to another, and each device keeps its own copy.

• On a computer: the folder you chose the first time you launched the app.
• On iPad: open the Filesapp, then “On My iPad > Mnemesia”. You will find the same structure as in the app: Courses, then the year, the semester, the subject and the chapter.
• On an Android tablet: open the Filesapp, then “Mnemesia” in the side panel.

By copying that folder, like any other folder: to a USB drive, an external disk, or a sync service. It contains everything, and can be dropped as is onto another machine.

On iPad, this is the step not to forget.From the Files app, copy the Mnemesia folder to iCloud Drive, a service of your choice or a computer. iOS erases an app’s storage when the app is uninstalled: deleting Mnemesia therefore deletes this folder, and the iPad’s iCloud backup only protects you against losing the device, not against this deletion.

On a computer, yes: you choose it the first time you launch the app, and you can move it afterwards. On iPad, no, and this is not a limit we impose on ourselves: iOS confines each app to its own storage and offers no folder picker. The location is therefore fixed, and it is precisely the one the Files app opens for you.

Nothing is lost, and this only affects computers. The app then shows a “local database unavailable” screen with a Find my folder button: point it to the folder in its new location, and everything comes back. Your courses are not in the app, they are in that folder.

No. Mnemesia opens and works entirely offline, without an account. It is free and has no ads, and the download doesn’t ask for anything either.

Yes. Mnemesia is a tool, not a content library: it contains no courses, no cards and no multiple-choice questions to start with. You add your lecture handouts, you make your cards, and the planner fills up from your timetable.

The first three steps, in order:

• in Courses, create a year, a semester, a subject, then import a PDF;
• in Flashcards, create a deck and a first card;
• in Planner, import your school’s calendar in .ics format.

By deleting the Mnemesia folder, then the app. On iPad and on Android tablets, deleting the app is enough: its storage goes with it. If you had turned on iCloud, also delete the Mnemesia folder from your iCloud Drive. Nothing remains anywhere else, and there is no data to request from anyone, since no one else has ever had any.
